For a number of years, I have been using my trusty Airport Extreme Basestation wireless router. I have had this router for so long, I cannot remember when I purchased it. More than 10 years ago, but less than 15.
Anyway, I wanted to get better coverage in my home and prepare for the addition of WiFi 6 devices.
Coverage
The Airport router did a fairly good job. But when I added some exterior Ring cameras (doorbell in the front and a Spotlight in the back), I had to add some range extenders to get the cameras on the network. The signal from the Airport was just a little too weak to use.
WiFi 6 Devices
Most of my wireless devices do not support WiFi 6, but some do; my iPhone 13 Pro Max and new Mac Studio do. I don’t think the new LG refrigerator does though.
The Router
It was a perfect storm. I had been watching reviews on this product when, lo and behold, a Best Buy Deal of the Day email showed up with the product on sale ($100 off). That, along with some stray Best Buy gift cards sealed the deal.
The Amplify Alien WiFi 6 Router was dream to set up. I used the Amplify app on my iPad to set the SSID and passcode, and VOILA!, the network was up and going with all wireless devices connected.
A quick check around the house showed ample signal strength. I moved my Ring cameras from the range extenders to the parent WiFi network. They were happy and my wife was happy since I could now unplug the insect-like (the antennae) extenders.
And, now, through the Amplify app, I have so much control over my home network.
